We created this T-shirt to celebrate the upcoming release of “Az Esm” (“I Am”), a book by film critic Anton Dolin and filmmaker Andrey Zvyagintsev. The book is coming soon to the Magaz store, and preorders are already open. The design draws inspiration from “Minotaur,” Zvyagintsev's latest film.
About 2,000 years ago, someone scratched a drawing of a labyrinth onto a wall of the House of Marcus Lucretius in Pompeii, along with a Latin inscription: LABYRINTHUS HIC HABITAT MINOTAURUS — “Labyrinth. Here lives the Minotaur.” The original graffiti has not survived, but its appearance was recorded in 19th-century sketches.
Our design stays close to the original, with an orange labyrinth, irregular Latin lettering, and translations in Russian and English. On the back, just below the collar, are the words “аз есмь” — “I am.”
